Step onboard our lovingly restored heritage carriages, hauled by our classic diesel locomotive DBR1254 for a great day out by train from Auckland or Hamilton to The Great New Zealand Muster at Te Kuiti!
Jump on board with the Glenbrook Vintage Railway for another relaxing day out by train!
Hauled by heritage diesel locomotive DBR1254 - our train will make its way through the farm lands of the North Waikato, before heading south into the King Country!
So hop on board as we step back in time – to how travel used to be – and experience the romance of traveling by rail.
It's been a few years since we last offered the opportunity to travel by train to The Great NZ Muster at Te Kuiti - so don't miss out!
Departing Waiuku, Glenbrook, or Pukekohe Stations (with AT Metro Electric Train connections) - we travel down the North Island Main Trunk towards Hamilton. On the way we pass by the Waikato River, before entering the Whangamarino Wetland with its unique mosaic of swams, fens, bogs, and open water. We then rejoin the Waikato River, following it as we skirt around Taupiri mountain, before crossing it at Ngaruawahia as we race towards Hamilton.
After picking up more fellow travellers from Hamilton's Rotokauri and Frankton stations, we pick up the pace once again passing through a quick succession of rural towns. To our right will be
the majestic Pirongia Mountain as we traverse the rich Waikato farming
pasture. South of Te Awamutu we pass over the Puniu River, entering the
King Country. After we pass through Otorohanga, you may catch a glimpse
of the Rangitoto Ranges to the left. From here it is only a short gallop
into Te Kuiti, where we arrive at 12.35pm.
Te Kuiti is the Shearing Capital of the World!
Proudly organised by the Waitomo District Council, the Great NZ Muster is a FREE annual event unique to the King Country. A cross between a country fair and a rural extravaganza, it truly is kiwi heartland at its best.
Everywhere you look, there’s something happening! Te Kuiti’s main street is transformed with sheep themed signs decorating shop fronts, sidewalks are lined with fantastic food stalls, arts and crafts displays, raffles and more! Enjoy everything that catches your eye, while enjoying to some exciting entertainment, including musicians, stilt walkers, magicians, balloon animal artists and more!
You will have plenty of time to browse the main street, before the famous running of the sheep at 2pm!
The train home departs at 2.40pm. We invite you to relax as you enjoy the sights again on the way home. Why not enjoy a snack and drink on the way home from our licensed bar service?
